First — Google Shows Results Two Ways

Before we get into the reasons, it's important to understand that Google shows local business results in two distinct places:

  • The Map Pack — the 3 businesses shown with a map at the top of local searches. Driven by your Google Business Profile.
  • Organic results — the regular blue links below. Driven by your website's SEO.

Most small businesses should focus on the map pack first — it's faster to crack and often gets more clicks than the organic results below it.

01

YOU DON'T HAVE A GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE

This is the single most common reason Oakville businesses don't appear in local searches. The map pack is powered entirely by Google Business Profile (GBP) — your website has almost nothing to do with it.

If you haven't claimed and verified your GBP listing, you simply don't exist in map results. It doesn't matter how good your website is.

Fix it: Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, and verify it. Fill every single field — hours, services, photos, description with your city name. This is free and takes about 30 minutes.
02

YOU HAVE NO GOOGLE REVIEWS

Google uses the number and quality of reviews as a major ranking signal for the map pack. A business with 10 reviews will almost always outrank a business with 0, even if the website is worse.

Most Oakville small business owners have happy clients — they just never ask for a review. That's a fixable problem.

Fix it: Text or email your last 5 clients a direct link to your Google review page. Ask them to leave an honest review. Five reviews can move you into the map pack within weeks.
03

YOUR WEBSITE HAS NO LOCAL SEO

Many Oakville small business websites were built on Squarespace, Wix, or by a friend — without any thought given to how Google reads them. No meta titles. No local keywords. No schema markup. Google doesn't know what you do or where you are.

A website that says "Welcome to our business — we offer great services" tells Google nothing. A website that says "Certified home stager in Oakville, Ontario serving Burlington and the GTA" tells Google exactly where to show you.

Fix it: Every page on your site needs a keyword-rich title tag, meta description, H1 heading, and LocalBusiness schema markup. If your current site has none of this, a rebuild is often faster than trying to fix it.
04

YOUR WEBSITE IS TOO SLOW OR NOT MOBILE-FRIENDLY

Google's Core Web Vitals update means page speed and mobile performance directly affect your ranking. A slow Squarespace or WordPress site loaded with plugins can score 30–50 on Google's performance test. A fast HTML site typically scores 95–100.

More importantly — over 70% of local searches happen on mobile. If your site is hard to use on a phone, people leave immediately, and Google notices.

Fix it: Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev. If you're scoring under 80 on mobile, it's hurting your ranking. Fast HTML sites hosted on Netlify consistently score 95+.
05

YOUR BUSINESS ISN'T LISTED IN LOCAL DIRECTORIES

Google uses something called "citations" — mentions of your business name, address, and phone number across the web — to verify that your business is real and local. The more consistent citations you have, the more Google trusts you.

Most Oakville small businesses are missing from the basic directories that cost nothing to join.

Fix it: Create free listings on Yelp Canada, Yellow Pages Canada, BBB, Houzz (for home services), and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce directory. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical across every listing.

The Fastest Path to Visibility

If you do nothing else, do these three things this week:

  • Set up and verify your Google Business Profile
  • Ask 5 existing clients for a Google review
  • Make sure your website has your city name and services clearly stated

Those three actions alone can get you into the Oakville map pack within 2–4 weeks — before your competitors even realize what you've done.
